Start With Gate Type: Swing or Slide
The single biggest factor in choosing an opener is whether your gate swings or slides, because the two use fundamentally different operator hardware. A swing gate operator mounts to the post and arm and pushes the gate open on its hinges. A slide gate operator drives the gate horizontally along a track. Swing and slide operators aren't interchangeable — the opener has to match the gate type, not the other way around.
If you're building a new gate from scratch, the driveway itself often decides this for you: flat, straight openings with room for the gate to swing into the property favor a swing gate, while sloped driveways, wide openings, or tight side clearance usually point toward a slide gate.
Match the Opener to the Gate's Weight and Size
Every gate operator has a rated maximum gate weight and width, and undersizing it is one of the most common ways an automatic gate system fails early. A motor that's underpowered for the gate it's driving will strain on every cycle, wear out its components faster, and struggle in wind or on an incline. Ornamental iron gates are heavier than a comparable wood or aluminum gate, so weight has to be part of the conversation from the start — not something you find out after the opener is already installed.
This is also where daily use matters. An opener rated for occasional residential use won't hold up the same way on a driveway that cycles the gate dozens of times a day. Duty cycle — how often the gate is designed to operate per hour — is worth asking about if your household or a home business means frequent openings.
Power Source
Most residential openers run on standard electric power run to the gate location. For gates far from an existing power source, a solar-charged operator is a practical option — it's still an electric motor, just charged by a solar panel and battery instead of a direct line run. Which makes more sense usually comes down to how far the gate sits from your home's power and how much trenching would be involved either way.

Access Control: How You'll Actually Get In
The opener is only half the system — you also need a way to tell it to open. Common options include:
- Keypad entry — a code-based keypad mounted at the driveway for you, family, and regular visitors like a landscaper or housekeeper.
- Remote controls — handheld clickers, similar to a garage door remote, for anyone who regularly drives in and out.
- Smartphone access — apps that let you open the gate from your phone, check status remotely, or grant temporary access to a visitor without handing out a code.
- Intercom or telephone entry — lets you see or talk to a visitor and buzz them in without leaving the house, useful for deliveries and guests who don't have a code.
Most households end up combining two or three of these rather than picking just one — a keypad for regular visitors, a remote for the household, and smartphone access as a backup or for guests.
Battery Backup for Power Outages
A driveway gate that only works when the power is on is a problem the first time Houston loses electricity in a storm. Most quality automatic gate operators include a battery backup that keeps the gate functional for a period after an outage, and nearly all have a manual release so the gate can be opened by hand if needed. When you're comparing openers, ask specifically what backup power is included and how the manual release works — it's not a detail to find out about for the first time during an actual outage.
Why Professional Installation Matters
Even the right opener, correctly sized, still depends on proper installation to be safe and reliable. Two things matter in particular:
- Safety sensor placement. Photo-eye sensors and monitored safety edges are what stop a closing gate from making contact with a person, vehicle, or pet. Placed incorrectly, they either fail to protect people near the gate or create constant false stops. This is a core part of UL 325, the industry safety standard for automated gate operators, and it's not something to leave to a generic installation.
- Code and setback compliance. Depending on your city and HOA, there can be requirements around gate setback from the street, visibility, and access for emergency vehicles. A professional installer accounts for this during layout, not after the gate is already in the ground.
