How Long Does Iron Fence Installation Take?

"How long will this take?" comes up in almost every conversation we have about a new fence project, and for good reason — you're planning around it. There's no single number that fits every yard, but there is a realistic range, and a clear list of what pushes a project toward the shorter or longer end of it.

A Typical Range for a Standard Residential Project

As a general, illustrative estimate — not a guarantee for every job — a standard residential iron fence project, using largely standard (not fully custom-fabricated) panels on a yard that doesn't need significant grading, often takes somewhere in the range of a few business days to about a week and a half of active on-site work, once materials are on hand and any required permit is in place. Smaller runs with a single gate can land on the shorter end; larger properties with more linear footage and multiple gates tend to land toward the longer end.

Factors That Affect the Timeline

Linear Footage

The most obvious factor: more feet of fence line means more post holes, more panels, and more time on site. A short front-yard run and a full property-perimeter fence are simply different scopes of work, even before anything else is considered.

Number and Type of Gates

Gates take more time per foot than straight fence line does. Framing, hanging, and aligning a gate so it swings correctly is a more involved step than setting a run of line posts and panels, and a project with two or three gates — especially a wide driveway gate — will generally take longer than one with none.

Site Prep and Grading Needs

A flat, clear yard with easy access is the fastest scenario. A sloped lot, an area with existing landscaping or hardscape in the way, or ground that needs grading before post holes can be dug correctly all add time before the fence itself even goes up.

Custom-Fabricated vs. Standard Panels

Standard ornamental steel panel systems are generally quicker to source and install than fully custom, hand-fabricated wrought iron work built to a specific design. Custom fabrication can produce a genuinely unique result, but the tradeoff is more shop time before installation day and typically a longer overall project timeline.

Permitting Lead Time

Building permit lead time into your overall project timeline up front avoids a surprise delay once materials are ready to go.

Weather Delays

Houston gets its share of heavy rain, and wet or saturated ground isn't a good environment for digging post holes or setting concrete correctly. A stretch of bad weather can push installation days back a bit — it's a normal part of outdoor construction in this area, not a sign that something's gone wrong with the project.
